What's Getting Spins: the Deric Wave

A 19-year-old artist from Atlanta, Georgia took the underground scene by storm when his 2021 single, “Go Anthem” blew up on TikTok.

The song amassed over a thousand videos using the song, with his videos to the song gaining hundreds of thousands of views.

The artist was incredibly surprised to see his own song blowing up. Having only began using TikTok the very month he blew up, it was a practical overnight success.

"I just promoted the song. It just started going up. That was that was pretty hard. I mean, I started going up (and) people started doing sounds and it just kept going after that. Then, I eventually dropped a song. Then, like a month later, I dropped a music video. The the rest is history."

But where did the young artist get his start? And better yet, where is he headed?

Artist and producer Deric is not your average Underground musician. Interestingly enough, he kick-started his music career during the heat of the pandemic. He explains how it all began:

“It was during quarantine (and) there was nothing to do but play video games. So, I see my friend doing music. So I was like ‘I'm gonna try it out’”.

The young musician hopped on his headset and mic and got to work. From there, he released his first SoundCloud song: Shawty in Love. The artist, originally having a small background in producing, began to fall in love with music and would eventually begin experimenting with vocals.

Putting his voice on the mic was a foreign experience for him at first; nonetheless, he grew more comfortable and confident in his own sound.

So, what exactly is his sound, like the one found in Go Anthem?

Deric said his sound is all about experimentation:

“Right now, (I’ve) been on my Plugg and Pluggnb. But that's not that's not all I do” the artist said.

He also wants to experiment with genres all across the board: R&B, love songs, “hype music”, and anything listeners can “vibe out” to.

The main goal for Deric as a growing musician is to stand out amongst the crowd.

“I definitely don't want to be underground forever. My goal is to be mainstream, for sure, which is why I try to differentiate myself from a lot of the underground artists”. And even if a sound has already been pioneered, he still wants to add his “type of sauce” to it.

Though Deric has collaborated with prod. By BT, Oliver Easton and others, he plans to hone in on his craft before working with other musicians for a while. However, he does want to collaborate with artists such as Autumn!, SSGKobe, Lil Tecca, and most of all, Sofaygo.

In the spirit of Underground artistry, Deric continues on his journey with the intent of simply having fun. He said that he's “taking it seriously” but “having fun with it”. Because, like many artists in Underground, he’s “still growing”.

“Some people might talk about my lyrics not making sense but I mean, it's all about love” the musician said. “I (have) fun on the song; y'all like it. That’s the whole point. To have fun. Just make vibes”.

With that being said, Deric plans to continue making music. With an EP on the way soon, the only direction to go from where he is now -- is up.
